Provider Letter

In order to provide a complete referral, we kindly ask that you attach our provider referral form along with a completed autism or developmental screening measure. Your completion of this screening tool is in line with the best practices for autism evaluations, the most current Medicaid guidelines regarding autism diagnostic services and ultimately will help us help you improve access to treatments for your patients and clients.

Who can give a screener?

  • PCP: MD, DO, CNP, CNS, PA
  • Psychologist
  • Speech-language pathologist (SLP)
  • Occupational therapist (OT)
  • Medicaid-enrolled behavioral health practitioner (LPCC, LISW/LCSW, LMHC, LMSW)
  • FIT program service coordinator
  • School-based health or educational professional involved in special ed eligibility determination process.

Why give a screener when making a referral?

  • Builds understanding of autism spectrum disorder so that referrals are most appropriate. You are key in this process because of your clinical judgment in making a referral and a screener can help you arrive at a decision!
  • Helps parents start to organize their observations about any concerns with their child’s development.
  • It’s a Medicaid requirement for children to gain access to a Stage 1 service (evaluation) with an AEP.
  • ONLY provide a screener to those children that you want to refer for a full evaluation and have concerns for. Screeners for ASD are not intended to be given to every child who is a patient at your practice.

Why this helps the NMSU ADC:

  • We have a long wait list and understand that we, as a specialty diagnostic clinic, are the bottleneck for diagnosis and ultimately timely receipt of intervention services. We need to make sure that referrals are appropriate prior to engaging families in our comprehensive evaluation process.
  • UNM CDD closed their waitlist to new referrals – we are the only other university-based multidisciplinary team offering comprehensive diagnostic evaluations. Our waitlist could also become unmanageable if we are inundated with referrals that may be best served by other evaluators.
  • ADC mission is to build capacity around identification, evaluation and treatment of autism. Your role as a clinical partner is highly valued and important to us!

We appreciate your assistance in helping our center move forward with our referral process in order to best serve the families in our community. Please refer to the list below for some of the appropriate screening tools that may be used to complete a referral to our center.
