Biography

Dr. Spencer received her Ph.D. in Speech and Hearing Science from the University of Iowa in Iowa City, IA. She was a research scientist on an NIH-funded Grant in the department of Otolaryngology at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for fifteen years.

Dr. Spencer first joined the department at NMSU in the fall of 2011 and served as the program director between 2013 and 2016, when she moved to Provo, UT, to serve as the founding program director for the Medical Speech-Language Pathology at Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions. She retired from that position in the Fall of 2024 and returned to the department at NMSU to continue as a college professor. Her research interests include the development of speech, language, and literacy in children who have profound hearing loss. She teaches courses in phonetics, aural rehabilitation, and language development.

 

Areas of interest

Dr. Spencer’s research investigates the cognitive underpinnings of the development of speech, language, and literacy in children who were born with hearing loss. She has been a co-PI on an NIH project with collaborators at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf in Rochester, NY.
