National Student Speech Language Hearing Association

Welcome to the New Mexico State University NSSLHA chapter! We are a pre-professional organization that provides opportunities for both graduate and undergraduate students in the Communication Disorders Program here at NMSU. NSSLHA is active within the campus and is involved in various community service events throughout the year. NSSLHA gives members the opportunity to network with their peers and professors.

Membership to the national chapter of NSSLHA requires a student to be registered in a program related to communication sciences, such as NMSU’s Communication Disorders degree plan. National membership is open to students ranging from the undergraduate to the doctoral level.

In Loving Memory - Cards for Raul

Cards for Raul

Raul Madrid

Within our chapter, we had the true privilege of knowing and loving our dear friend Raul. Raul was 65 and lived with Spastic Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy, but he never let that define him. He had the brightest spirit, the kindest heart, and a smile that made everyone around him feel welcome and seen. He communicated through his AAC device or by using his right foot, but more than anything, Raul communicated through the love and joy he shared with others.

One of Raul’s greatest passions was painting with his feet. With the help of volunteers, he created beautiful pieces of art and handmade cards that carried his creativity and warmth. Every brushstroke showed his determination and love for life, and every card he made was a gift of his spirit.

Raul passed away earlier this year, though Raul is no longer with us, his memory lives on deeply in our chapter and in everyone who had the blessing of knowing him. He taught us patience, resilience, and the beauty of expressing yourself in any way possible. Most importantly, he reminded us of the power of kindness and connection. Raul will forever be a part of our NSSLHA family.

We invite you to continue celebrating Raul’s life and his incredible talent by visiting his Instagram (@cardsforraul). Thank you for helping us carry on his memory and for keeping his light alive within our community.
